Bill 276, Relating to Nuclear Energy
Chairman Arakaki and Council Members:
The Hawaii Farm Bureau Federation is a non-profit, non-governmental and voluntary
organization representing 2,000 farm family members state-wide. We protect and advance the
social, economic and educational interests of Hawaii's farmers and ranchers.
The Hawaii Farm Bureau strongly supports the development of a commercial post harvest
irradiation treatment facility in Hawaii. We believe that such a facility is a critical tool to assist
with the future expansion of Hawaii's diversified agricultural industry.
As we make this historic transition phase from sugar production to a diversified industry, we
need to take advantage of every opportunity to explore our market potential within the global
marketplace. The construction of an irradiation facility, along with Hawaii's year round growing
season, will give us an opportunity to export our fresh products anywhere in the world at any
time.
On behalf of our members, we strongly urge your continued support for the development and use
of a commercial irradiation facility on the Big Island, and we ask that you vote no on Bill 276.
