Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Communication No. 1112, reports as
follows:
Communication No. 1112, transmitted by Mayor Harry Kim, dated March 8, 2008, nominates
Mr. Gary Yoshiyama of Council District 2, to the Hawaii County Merit Appeals Board.
Mr. Yoshiyama is a 57 year resident of Hawaii, and worked as a union representative for HGEA
and is currently a member of the County of Hawai`i's Liquor Adjudication Board. He formerly
served as a member of the County of Hawai`i's Liquor Commission, the Workforce
Development Board, and the Charter Commission. Mr. Yoshiyama states that he is a registered
Democrat. If confirmed, he will serve a term to end on December 31, 2012, replacing one of two
members whose terms expired on December 31, 2007.
Pursuant to Article XIV, Section 14-5, Hawaii County Charter, there shall be a Board of Ethics,
consisting of five members who shall be residents of the County, appointed by the Mayor with
the approval of the Council.
The Committee agreed that Mr. Yoshiyama does not have to appear before the full Council for
final confirmation.
Your Committee on Finance recommends the confirmation of Mr. Gary Yoshiyama to the
Hawaii County Merit Appeals Board, to serve a term ending December 31, 2012.
