Your Committee on Public Works and Parks, to which was referred Communication No. 690,
is from Keith T. Burley, Vice Commander for District IV, American Legion, Department of
Hawaii, informing that he was advised by Dr. C. O'M. S. Smith, Commander of Post 20, that
their membership unanimously approved to request and petition the Council to approve the name
of "PU 'U HO 'OMAHA O NA PO 'E KOA O HAWAII KOMOHANA" for the Veterans'
Cemetery in West Hawaii.
Communication No. 690.01 is from Constance R. Kiriu, Legislative Auditor, dated
February 14, 1998, informing your Committee that the use of the macron is in question, and is
awaiting a response from the University of Hawaii-Hilo Hawaiian Language department.
Mr. Burley agreed that there was a typographical error in the Hawaiian spelling.
Your Committee is in accord with the purpose and intent of Communication No. 690, and
recommends a bill be drafted and waived to full Council for passage on first reading, naming the
West Hawaii Veterans' Cemetery "PiJ'iJ HO'OMAHA O NA PO'E KOA O HAWAII
KOMOHANA".
