We do not fully understand it until we walk through it ourselves. Often we are isolated with our sorrow. No one seems to understand what we are experiencing and those who do are often at a loss for words. The Purpose of a Grief Support Group Although a support group cannot take away your pain or bring your loved one back, it can provide a unique setting within which to continue on your journey towards recovery. There is a shared feeling of understanding in the groups where others have had similar experiences. Hospice of Hilo Wants to Help Although each person faces grief in their own unique way, sharing one's experiences, thoughts and feelings with others who have also suffered a loss may aid in the healing process. Grief support groups provide ongoing emotional support and information by professionally trained staff and volunteers. The Hospice of Hilo Bereavement Program is an extension of Hospice care and offers individual and group support to those who have experienced the loss of a loved one. The Hawaiian words, "Pohai Maluhia" were chosen as the camp name as they describe a welcoming circle "Encircling Peace" Where family and friends unite to find strength on life's journey. The weekend experience empowers youth to make positive choices in overcoming the obstacles in their journey. Parents/guardians are invited to meet con -currently to learn additional ways of supporting their youth as well as coping with their own sense of grief. Hospice is concerned not only with the physical welfare of the person, but also with their social, emotional, and spiritual well being. The Executive Committee of the Board meets at 4:00 p.m. on the 3rd Wednesday of each month and the full board meets at 4:30 p.m. on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at Hospice of Hilo, 1011 Waianuenue Avenue, Hilo, Hawaii. www.hospiceofhilo.org X Victor Segobia continued from page 1 Victor's wife, Eleanor, says he rarely speaks about what happened during the war, but she recalls one story he told about his best buddy who was shot by the Germans, Eleanor proudly notes that Victor was awarded the bronze star for his bravery in throwing grenades into German bunkers. Victor recalls that some of the toughest times as a paratrooper were the moments when he was hooking up to the static line and jumping out of the plane door. It was "scary, but exciting." On his last jump near Frankfort he was hit in the mid-section by an enemy sniper. One kidney was lost and his bladder was badly injured. He was taken prisoner, stripped of his identification bracelet and Lugar. His wounds were treated by a Polish physician. When Victor was released from the hospital, he saluted his doctor. The U.S. Army considered Victor missing in action and sent a tele- gram to this effect to his grandmother. Refusing to believe that he could be dead, she walked to mass every day to pray for him and proclaim, "He's alive!" She made a promise to the Virgin Mary that when Victor came home she would make sure that he visited the Cathedral of Guadalupe in Mexico City and crawl on his knees down the aisle to give thanks at the alter of the sacred heart. And that is what he did. About this time, Victor married his first wife. Between them they had seven children. Years later, after they divorced, Victor came to Kona. Not long after arriving in Kona, he worked on a job site where the home owner, Moses Paiva, was jack -hammering a cess- pool. Leaking gas from the jack -hammer rendered Moses uncon- scious. Victor jumped into the hole and carried the man out. Both were sent to the hospital. That is where Victor met Moses' sister, Eleanor. She soon became his second wife, and together they raised two sons, Roberto and Ramon. It was at Lapaka's Cabinet Shop in Kona where Victor burnished his skills as a cabinet maker. When he moved to Hilo, he established his own cabinet making shop which he and Eleanor ran for the next 28 years, and where he taught his sons the trade. When Victor retired, Roberto and Ramon took over the shop. Now in the hospice program, Victor notes proudly, that the VA is covering 100% of his medical expenses, including his wheel chair and medications. He considers himself very fortunate. He also has high praise for his hospice nurse, Rachel, and for his CNA, Carlos. When asked to name the things in his life of which he is most -proud, Victor says that he is proud of owning his own home and proud of having "married a damn good wife. She really takes care of me." He also named his hanai son, James Kimura, who is a great help. As for advice for the younger generation, Victor says "Stay away from drugs, do everything legally, don't steal, work for your dough, stay in school and don't make fun of older people." Good advice for every generation! Mr. Segobia passed away on February 1, 2008. At the conclusion of our interview, Victor took out an award he received from then - mayor of Hawaii County, Stephen Yamashiro. The award, which was dated September 30, 1995, the 501h anniversary of the end of WW II, reads "A Grateful Nation Remembers." Indeed, we do. 9 A HOSPICE HAPPENINGS N PAGE 3 :0 Roy Allegretti continued from page 1 man at Westinghouse. In 1950, he was again called to active duty when President Truman mobilized the Reserves for deployment in Korea. He served one year in the public works division where he was involved in building gas and water lines. When he was discharged in 1951 he reclaimed is job at Westing- house. From Westinghouse he moved from one engineering job to another. He moved first to the Cardox Corporation, then to Philco- Ford in Palo Alto. At Philco-Ford he had top secret clearance and was involved in designing space craft for the first communications satellite—the Courier—a one -meter circumference ball crammed with electronics gear and sporting solar panels. He next moved to Smith -Kline Instruments where he was engaged in designing medical instrumentation. He was responsible for de- signing the plastic molding that housed the first portable defibrilla- tor. He was also involved in designing a communications satellite that was slated to pass behind the sun, beaming radio waves through it to measure its gaseous content. Roy later moved to Beckton - Dickinson in Sunnyvale to work on an argon laser to break down elements for monoclonal antibodies. Subsequently, at IBM he worked on the mainframe computer and on the design of an access arm that read data from computer disks. Roy's life was not all work however. He was also an avid athlete. He ran 10 kilometer races and a marathon. He took up swimming. Cycling was also a major focus of his life. One trip took him from Palo Alto along Route One to Big Sur, California. Another 2 -week cycling tour occurred in Holland. Amidst all of these activities, Roy became a husband and father. He and his wife raised 5 children. She passed away in 1998. Later in life, when he was in his 60s, Roy met Jim Davis, another engineer. They met in San Jose on the eve of Jim's departure for a job in Australia, and Roy's departure for a bicycling tour of Europe. Although they kept in touch, they initially had no plans to get back together. Roy's bicycling group departed from Trafalgar Square in London, journeying through Belgium, the Netherlands, West Germany, Czechoslovakia and Poland before reaching the culmination of their tour in Red Square in Moscow. The 2,038 mile journey took 6 '/s weeks to complete. When Roy returned from Europe, Jim came to live with him and their relationship took off. When Roy's house was sold they asked themselves, "what next?" Roy suggested moving to Hawaii to "complete the circle" back to his mother's roots. They now live on a 3 acre parcel in Hawaiian Acres. Roy attributes the success of their 20 year marriage to this philosophy: "It's not what you get from a relationship, it's what you give." Roy says he just wants peace and typically goes with the flow. He truly believes in the Aloha Spirit and would like to see more of it. He believes in people helping people. "Don't be indifferent," he says. Now 80 years old and in the hospice program, Roy's motto—from his Italian heritage—is "non fa-niente " which means It doesn't matter.
