HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 706 Draft 01 2006-2008 ~1~YY Oip~_ COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII RESOLUTION NO. 70G 08 A RESOLUTION TO REDEDICATE THE MONUMENT FOR ALEXANDER JOY CARTWRIGHT, JR., THE FATHER OF MODERN DAY BASEBALL, AND THE PERSON WHO WAS INFLUENCIAL IN PROMOTING BASEBALL IN HILO AND THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS. WHEREAS, Alexander Joy Cartwright, Jr., the "Father of Modern Day Baseball", drew the baseball diamond, set the distance between bases at 90 feet apart, established nine innings as a game, and nine players as a team; and WHEREAS, Mr. Cartwright organized the Knickerbocker Baseball Club of New York in 1845, brought baseball to the Pacific Coast, and then ultimately to the Hawaiian Islands; and WHEREAS, Mr. Cartwright established the first baseball league composed of teams he created throughout the Hawaiian Islands, which became the model used in the American and National Leagues of Major League Baseball; and WHEREAS, 69 years ago the County of Hawaii recognized these achievements with the enactment of "Cartwright Day" on August 27, 1939; and WHEREAS, on June 3, 1953, the United States Congress officially credited Alexander Joy Cartwright, Jr., with inventing the modern day game of baseball; and WHEREAS, as part of the "Cartwright Day" observance, a monument was created by Manuel "Manoel" Tavares, superintendent of public parks, County of Hawaii; and WHEREAS, the monument was originally placed in the centerfield of Ho`olulu Park and later moved to the foyer of the Francis Wong Stadium; and WHEREAS, the original marker was lost, and the monument sits unidentified and its significance unknown, showing visible evidence where the original marker existed; and WHEREAS, there are efforts by members of the community and the county to replace the missing plaque, create additional plaques to honor Mr. Tavares and exhibit the list of events and games played at the celebration of "Cartwright Day" in 1939, and rededicate the monument by hosting a celebration in honor of Mr. Cartwright and Mr. Tavares; now, therefore, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the County of Hawaii shall replace the missing plaque, produce additional plaques as appropriate, and rededicate the monument at the Francis Wong Stadium in celebration of "Cartwright Day". BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the County Clerk is requested to transmit copies of this resolution to Mr. Wayne Subica; Mrs. Marion Tavares Ortiz Kittelson-Villanueva; Mr. Richard Nakamura; Patricia Engelhard, director, department parks and recreation; Arlene Miyake, recreation administrator, parks and recreation; and the Honorable Mayor Harry Kim.
