Dear Chair Chun and Members:
I am writing this letter to support Resolution No. 328-98, authorizing the County of
Hawaii to accept funds for marijuana eradication on the Big Island.
If it is illegal to grow this plant, then it is the job of law enforcement agencies to eradicate
the plants and to prosecute those who choose to break the law. If we were to do
otherwise, our credibility as officers and employees of the County would be seriously
compromised. Besides this credibility argument, allowing marijuana to slip by may have
the snowballing effect of attracting dealers of other illegal substances. Can we afford to
"look the other way" on anything illegal? Can we risk having a reputation of being "soft"
on any illegal activity when such illegal activities also have a negative impact on the
economic well being of our community. It is in this light that I ask you to vote for the
resolution before you.
