Re: Department of Public Works - Legislative Auditor Recommendations
Dear Chairperson Hoffmann and Council Members:
The Legislative Auditor's report on the Department of Public Works makes a number of
recommendations that are far-reaching in scope, particularly relating to development of a CIP master
plan and management of capital projects.
This administration has about three months remaining before leaving office. Our main tasks in this
very limited time are to work diligently on projects underway, stabilize the County's budget
situation, and prepare for an efficient and orderly transition to a new administration on December 1.
These are the highest priorities in the limited time available.
The Department of Public Works will continue to review its operations and implement the Auditor's
recommendations that can be accomplished internally without additional resources. However, the
more complex recommendations will require establishment of new practices and procedures in the
Departments of Public Works, Planning, and Finance and will require considerable commitment by
the new administration to implement. Therefore, it is recommended that further action on major
recommendations be left to the new administration. This administration does not have adequate time
remaining to make major changes to current procedures. Thank you for your understanding.
