Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Resolution No. 713-08, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 713-08, transmitted jointly with Bill No. 336 by Director of Finance William Takaba, via
Communication No. 1360, dated July 24, 2008, authorizes the Office of the Mayor to enter into an agreement
with the United States of America for the FY 2008 Assistance to Firefighters grant for the Hawaii County Fire
Department.
The Hawaii Fire Department has been awarded a $424,963 grant from the U. S. Department of Homeland
Security's FY 2008 Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AEG) program. This grant will be used for the
establishment of a Firefighter Health & Wellness program involving an extensive individual medical
assessment and monitoring program; an education and training program, and the provision exercise and health
assessment equipment.
Pursuant to Section 46-7, Hawaii Revised Statutes, and Section 13-13(b), Hawaii County Charter, the Mayor
is hereby authorized to enter into agreements with the federal or state governments respecting action to be taken
pursuant to any of the powers granted by law to furnish, expend and receive any funds or other assistance in
connection with projects being or to be undertaken pursuant to those powers.
Council Member Bob Jacobson requested that a representative from the Hawaii Fire Department be at the next
full Council meeting to address mathematical calculations.
Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Resolution No. 713-08, and
recommends its adoption.
