Good Morning, member s of Hawaii COunty Council:
THis is my testimony.
I have just purchased a parcel of greafi taro land in Pepeekeo. As soon as I fence out the wild
pigs, we will be planting several acres of wetland taro. In perpetuating this crop it is essential
that it remain clear of Genetic Modification.
I am horrified at the status of corn and papayas on this island since government slip ups allowed
rampant use of Hawaii County Land as an open air laboratory for experimentation in Genetic
Modification. On the mainland U.S,, this kinid of dangerpous experimentation takes place only in
sealed laboratories. Lax government policy has already turned Hawaii island residents into lab
rats.
I ask you to support a ten year moratorium on use of GMOs in taro and coffee, and please do not
stop there. Please let us work together to curtail ALL GMO experimentation in Hawaii except in
sealed laboratories. No open air planting.
Consider our children and their great grandchildren. Once opened, you will not be able to close
this barn door. THree or four thousand years of Polynesian and Proto polynesian development at
taro will be lost. Please help us to help ourselves.
As a stopgap measure, would you please take action and require that alll foods consisting of
genetically modified components be LABELLED so that shoppers may choose to buy it and eat it.
It is totally unfair that unjlike ALL OF EUROPE ,Americans are NOT able to discern which foods
are Genetically Modified. BIG AGRICULTURE still has such a hold on government that
Americans are unable to make'an educated decision on what to feed their families.
