SUBJECT: Addendum to October 20, 1998 HS&EDC Agenda
I will be scheduling an additional presentation by an ad hoc "Special Hilo/East Hawaii Tourism
Group" on October 20, 1998. For many months, they have been looking at the quality and nature
of reception and services for visitors arriving via cruise ships in Hilo. They are also developing a
program titled "Aloha Spoken Here," a culturally-based informational protocol and network to
enhance the visitor's experience in East Hawaii.
By the time of our meeting, the Special Tourism Group members should present a summary
report of their activities and recommendations for distribution to council members.
This added agenda item promises to focus long-needed attention on Hilo's shipboard arrival
visitor economy.
