It also represents a rare opportunity to rid ourselves of a known noxious pest before numbers have increased to an irremedial level. I wish to thank you for your earlier support in helping rid Hawaii of this problem and express to you the Department of Land and Natural Resources continued commitment to effectively meet the challenge this pest poses to our State. I understand that there is a proposal before the Hawaii County Council (#R&D1998-99/1) to supply $150,000 of County funds over the next two years for Miconia suppression. I encourage you to again support appropriation of this funding, which not only will help us win our battle against one of the worst pests to arrive in Hawaii, but are also essential in helping us leverage State and federal funding to continue this important work. I understand that some people consider the level of infestation on Hawaii Island to be too large for Miconia to be effectively controlled. However, I am convinced that this is in error and that with the level of support we are achieving and will continue to achieve, from a variety of partners, effective control of Miconia on Hawaii Island will be realized in the next few years. Hook forward to working with you toward meeting this goal. Aloha, MICHAEL D. WILSON FIAQ rro.. '2F e Tu:
