REPORT OF THE
COMMITTEE ON PLANNING
DATE: July I, 1997 Re: C-353
PLACE: Councilroom
TIME: 9:15 a. m.
Chair and Members
Hawaii County Council
Hilo, Hawaii 96720
Your Committee on Planning, to which was referred Resolution No. 110-97 transmitted by
Mayor Stephen K. Yamashiro via Communication No. 353 dated June 5, 1997, reports as
follows:
The purpose of Resolution No. 110-97 is to name a certain roadway within the Olaa Reservation
Lots at Olaa, Puna, Hawaii. This resolution names the following roadway in Exhibit "A" of this
resolution as "Hawelu Road" named after a renown kia manu or bird catcher who operated a rest
stop or halfway house on this Hilo-Kilauea crater trail or commonly referred to as"Homesteads
Road."
Pursuant to Section 22-35, Article 2, Chapter 22 of the Hawaii County Code, the Council is
authorized to adopt street nanies for Hawaii County's unnamed roadways.
The Planning Commission recommended favorable consideration for the naming of the roadways
and more than sixty percent of the landowners being served by this roadway have agreed to the
name "Hawelu Road." The area has been historically referred to as Hawelu's and this homestead
road has been referred to as "Hawelu Road" by kamaaina residents.
Your Committee on Planning concurs with the intent and purpose of Resolution No. 110-97 and
recommends its adoption.
