Re: Operating Budget 0 4
r
The Geothermal Relocation and Community Benefits Fund Program was established
for the relocation of owner-occupants residing near the Puna Geothermal Venture's
plant and who want to be permanently relocated, and to fund expenditures for the
benefit of Lower Puna; including but not limited to, road improvements, water
infrastructure development, land acquisition, parks and recreational facility needs, civil
defense mass transit improvements.
Councilmember Emily Naeole has requested that some of the funds be used to
purchase durable, plastic lockers and benches for the men's and women's locker
rooms at the Pahoa Community Aquatic Center. The Pahoa Pool is one of the busier
County pools and the patrons have requested new lockers to replace the existing
rusted ones and to also get sturdier benches.
Enclosed is a bill for an ordinance to amend the Operating Budget and appropriate
Geothermal Relocation and Community Benefits Funds for lockers and benches for the
Pahoa Community Aquatic Center. Former Planning Director Chris Yuen had given
his recommendation towards this purchase.
If there are any questions, please do not hesitate to call the Department of Parks and
Recreation.

A. REQUEST:
To transfer $23,014 from the Geothermal account to the Aquatics Misc. Equipment account
to fund lockers and benches for the Pahoa Pool men's and women's locker rooms
B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED):
Currently, the Pahoa Pool has metal lockers that, over time, have become rusted. Also, some of the
benches are damaged. Councilwoman Emily Naeole has requested that some geothermal monies go to the
Pahoa Community Aquatic Center to address these issues. The funds would be sufficient to replace the
current lockers and benches with durable, plastic ones. This would allow the locker rooms to be hosed down
without the fear of these items rusting.
The Pahoa Pool is one of the busier pools in the County, with over 100,000 patrons attending this past year.
Patrons have requested lockers that won't get their clothes and other belongings dirty and benches that are
sturdy.
