Aloha council member/chair Yoshimoto,
In the newspaper this morning, there was an article about the three new "proposed"
rules by You. Two of them seem ok, but the third will remove transparency from
Council Hearings.
The proposed new rule change is this:
"Prohibiting Council Members from asking questions during the public comment portion
of the meeting."
I have just recently retired and have had time to start taking an interest in coming to
council meetings and testifying in issues that are important to me and to sustainable
living on this island. I have found that questions posed by the council members area
good thing for several reasons:
1. If a person has some new or conflicting information the questions make it possible
to gain some clarity on issues and also make people accountable for what they are
saying .
2. In some case a person had alot of good information to share but the alloted time
did not allow for all of it and the questions helped to expand on the subject.
3. If a person can not stand up to a question, then they have not been giving honest
testimony, this flushes those people out.
4. The questions asked for the most part made the testimony time seem less
daunting and humanized it more.
5. The questions made for interesting listening and I ended up staying for the entire
council session as I found new information brought to light.
6. Many people will leave after testifying and then would NOT be there to answer a
question at the end.
7. it allows for conflicts of interest to surface and flushes out people with hidden
agendas.
Please reconsider his rule change and continue to allow for questions by council
members.
