Res. 816-08 Requests the County of Hawaii to Immediately Initiate a Campaign to Protect
(2006-2008): Hawaii Island from the Invasive Little Fire Ant (LFA). (Urges the County's
Administration to designate a person(s) to coordinate efforts to control LFA
infestations by March 1, 2009; create a taskforce to provide management oversight
for the County's response to this crisis and ensure that information from farmers are
considered by this taskforce; update the mapping of LFA infestations on the island;
advocate at the State level for inspection of landscape materials as well as
inspection and testing of all nurseries for the presence of LFA infestations (followed
by quarantine and treatment of infected nurseries); mount a LFA public education
campaign to provide direction on the prevention and eradication of LFA
infestations; seek State and Federal assistance for its efforts concerning the LFA
including public education, control, and researching the viable solutions for
containment of LFA infestations; present a progress report to the County Council by
May 1, 2009 on its efforts to control LFA infestations, including an assessment of
possible State, Federal, or private funding sources for research and containment; and
strongly urges that necessary funding is allocated in the 2009-2010 Operating
Budget.)
