Your Committee on Environmental Management, to which was referred Resolution 816-08,
reports as follows:
Resolution 816-08 was transmitted from Council Chair Pete Hoffmann, via Communication
1566, dated October 28, 2008, requests the County of Hawaii to immediately initiate a
campaign to protect Hawaii Island from the invasive Little Red Fire Ant.
The purpose of this resolution is to urge the administration to designate a person or persons to
coordinate efforts to control Little Red Fire Ants (LFA) infestations on the island.
There were farmers, researchers, and many other members of the public that testified in favor of
the resolution some offering stories of personal experiences that were most helpful for committee
members' understanding of what is really happening on the island. LFA's aze reported island
wide and pose a serious threat to agriculture, wildlife and have been reported to cause blindness
in livestock and pets.
Your Committee on Environmental Management is in accord with the purpose and intent of
Resolution 816-08, and recommends its adoption.
