HomeMy WebLinkAboutREP EMC 020 11/20/2008 2006-2008REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT DATE: November 20, 2008 Re: Comm. 1566/Res. 816-08 PLACE: Councilroom Ben Franklin Building, 2"d Floor 333 Kilauea Ave. Hilo, Hawaii TIME: 10:30 a.m. Council Chair and Members Hawaii County Council Hilo, Hawaii 96720 Your Committee on Environmental Management, to which was referred Resolution 816-08, reports as follows: Resolution 816-08 was transmitted from Council Chair Pete Hoffmann, via Communication 1566, dated October 28, 2008, requests the County of Hawaii to immediately initiate a campaign to protect Hawaii Island from the invasive Little Red Fire Ant. The purpose of this resolution is to urge the administration to designate a person or persons to coordinate efforts to control Little Red Fire Ants (LFA) infestations on the island. There were farmers, researchers, and many other members of the public that testified in favor of the resolution some offering stories of personal experiences that were most helpful for committee members' understanding of what is really happening on the island. LFA's aze reported island wide and pose a serious threat to agriculture, wildlife and have been reported to cause blindness in livestock and pets.
