RESOLUTION NO. 53 97
A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING FUNDING TO HELP DEFRAY THE COST OF
SENDING PARTICIPANTS TO THE 1997 SPECIAL OLYMPICS SUMMER GAMES.
Whereas, the East Hawaii Chapter of the Special Olympics is a worthwhile
organization that provides year round sports training and athletic competition for all
children and adults with mental retardation; and
Whereas, the East Hawaii Chapter of the Special Olympics promotes activities
which furnish continuing opportunities for participants to develop physical fitness, courage
and valuable social skills; and
Whereas, the mission of the East Hawaii Chapter of the Special Olympics as weD as
the interllational organization of the Special Olympics is to help people with mental
retardation to be openly and freely accepted into larger society; and
Whereas, they strive to achieve this commendable objective by organizing and
taking part in both local and Statewide Olympic Games; and
Whereas, the next Statewide Games, the 1997 Summer Games, will be held in May
at the the University of Hawaii at Manoa; and
Whereas, the East Hawaii Chapter of the Special Olympics would like to send a
total of 80 delegates to participate at these games; and
Whereas, in order to do such, they are in need of $6,000 to defray the travel cost to
the games, which is estimated at $18,000.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY
OF HAW All that it is in the public interest to ensure that the East Hawaii Chapter of the
Special Olympics has the opportunity to participate in this event by appropriating funds to
help diminish travel cost for Hilo participants.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED it authOl"izes the payment of no more than $6,000
from Clerk-Council SVC-OCE Miscellaneous Contract Services Account No. 010-101-
5101.02-115 (Council District 5 discretionary funds) to be paid to the to East Hawaii
Special Olympics Organization for the purpose of traveling to/from the 1997 Summer
Games on Oahu.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit
copies of this resolution to Lisa Onorato, Director, East Hawaii Special Olympics and
Harry Takahashi, Finance Director, County of Hawaii.
