Subject: Kona Heights and Kona CDP
Aloha Hawaii County Council,
After all the work we have all been doing with Community Development Planning, I was totally sickened
by the January 10th article in West Hawaii Today regarding the apparent disrespect shown by some
County Council members for the Kona CDP and the process in general. When the CDP process began,
our original focus groups - a large number of residents in Waikoloa Village - expressed concern about
spending our valuable time to try to become part of the community development process when the
probability was overwhelming that our work would be a paper product and be ignored. It took weeks of
work to convince our friends and neighbors that this time would be different; it was a chance to make a
difference and we needed to take it. Boy, do we feel foolish now.
If this article is a true representation of the actions of some county council members, I
must strongly request that you all take a step back and take another look. You simply must vote
AGAINST the rezoning (AGAINST BILL 322) unless it is amended to comply with the Kona CDP.
Collectively you are looking at thousands of hours spent in communities in the past three years only to be
shown the true colors of some on this council. There are a greater number of residents involved in this
process than you may realize. If they didn't vote before, you can bet they will in the future.
If we are ever to make community decision-making a reality, the process and results must be honored and
enforced.
