RESOLUTION NO. 11 0 97
NAMING A STREET IN THE COUNTY OF HAWAII, STATE OF HA WAIl.
WHEREAS, the Council of the County of Hawaii is authorized to adopt street names for
unnamed roadways in the County of Hawaii pursuant to Section 22-35, Article 2, Chapter 22,
Hawaii County Code; and
WHEREAS, the Territory of Hawaii created a subdivision known as Olaa Reservation
Lots in the early 1900's at Olaa, Puna, Hawaii; and
WHEREAS, the roadway connecting a portion of the Olaa Reservation Lots to the
Volcano Road (Main Government Road) has been referred to as "Homestead Road" on the Tax
Maps; and
WHEREAS, this "Homesteads Road" is situated where a rest stop or halfway house on
the Hilo-Kilauea crater trail was operated by Hawelu, a renown kia manu or bird catcher; and
WHEREAS, this area has been historically referred to as Hawelu's; and
WHEREAS, this "Homesteads Road" has been referred to as "Hawelu Road" by
kamaaina residents of the area; and
WHEREAS, more than sixty percent of the landowners being served by this roadway
have agreed to the name "Hawelu Road;"

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawaii,
names "Hawelu Road" in accordance with the attached map identified as Exhibit A.
