RESOLUTION NO. 149 97
A RESOLUTION EXPRESSING CONDOLENCES IN MEMORY OF
THE LATE WILLIAM SEIZO KAWAHARA
WHEREAS, former Hawaii County Councilman William Seizo Kawahara, of
Waiaha-Kona, died on August 5, 1997, at the age of82; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Kawahara served for a total of twelve continuous years on the
Hawaii County Council as the North and South Kona District Councilman from
1972 through 1984; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Kawahara, most commonly known as "Farmer Bill", strongly advocated
careful planning and controlled development for Kona; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Kawahara was admired for his generosity and unselfishness to
community service in which, under his leadership, the Big Island received critical improvements
including a major seaport at Kawaihae, a modem coastal highway from Kona International
Airport to Kawaihae which opened the North Kohala to Kailua-Kona "Gold Coast", and direct
mainland air service to Kona; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Kawahara helped to improve public recreational opportunities for Kona
residents by his support for and naming of the "Harold K. Higashihara Park"; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Kawahara demonstrated his strong commitment to children and their
safety by initiating the planning and construction of the Palani Pedestrian Overpass; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Kawahara wished to protect and enhance the natural beauty ofKona
and, towards this end, regularly provided free seedlings of native trees and plants to interested
citizens throughtout the community; and

WHEREAS, Mr. Kawahara will be greatly missed, and his contributions to the
community will long be remembered by the many lives he so positively influenced.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE
COUNTY OF HA WAIl that it hereby extends its sincere condolences and deepest
sympathy to his wife, Mrs. Kay M. Kawahara, and to the Kawahara family.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii transmit
copies of this Resolution to Mrs. Kay M. Kawahara and the Kawahara family.
