<br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />., --... . <br /> <br />COUNTY OF HAWAII <br /> <br />STATE OF HAWAII <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. <br /> <br />170 97 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION REQUESTING THAt THE DEP ART~NT OF PARKS AND <br />RECREATION, THE DEPARTMENT OF BUSINESS ECONOMIC DEYELOPl\1ENT AND <br />TOURISM, HAWAII'S BIG ISLAND VISITORS BUREAU AND THE HAWAII ISLAND <br />CHAMBER OF COMl\1ERCE RECO~~ THE PUNALU'U BEACH PARKAS THE <br />PUNALU'U BLACK SAND BEACH P T' <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the District ofKa'u has suffered economically since the closure of the sugar <br />industry in 1996; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, in response to this economic slump, efforts are being made to promote our <br />island's largest industry-tourism; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Hawaii has many beautiful and rare attractions to offer the world; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, one of those extraordinary features is the Punalu'u Black Sand Beach; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Punalu'u Black Sand Beach, which is unofficially called the Punalu'u Beach <br />Park, is one of the very few swimmable black sand beaches in our entire state; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, a planned community cultural center for Punalu'u will heighten the allure of <br />this destination; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, increased exposure ofPunalu'u to the tourism industry would benefit <br />Naalehu, Pahala and the entire Island and State of Hawaii; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, it is incumbent upon our County to take a more active lead in encouraging <br />the promotion of our island by recognizing extraordinary natural treasures of our island in a <br />distinctive light. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOL YED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF <br />HAW All that we request the Department of Parks and Recreation take the necessary action to <br />name this area the Punalu'u Black Sand Beach Park. <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER RESOL YED, that the Council requests the Department of Business, <br />Economic Development and Tourism, Hawaii's Big Island Visitors Bureau and the Hawaii Island <br />Chamber of Commerce, officially recognize the Punalu'u Black Sand Beach Park as such and gear <br />future promotions to this proper identity. <br />
