Re: Presentation by Students of the International Christian School's
American History and Government Class
As part of their American History and Government class, sixth through eighth grade students of
the International Christian School located in Council District 8 are being encouraged by their
teacher, Ms. Lisa Orvis that service to their community and being involved in government is a
very important aspect of learning about community building and their role as citizens. Ms. Orvis
created a class project whereby her students were divided into three research groups. The three
working groups were instructed to identify an issue that affects their community, determine what
current law or regulation applies, and research and develop a proposal for possible solution to
address the identified issue either through proposed legislation or community education.
I believe it is very important that youth involvement in government and understanding
governmental processes is an invaluable educational tool for our young adults and provides an
opportunity for representatives in government to envision and learn what issues are important to
the youth of our community as society moves into the future.
Therefore, I respectfully request that thirty (30) minutes of time be allocated on the appropriate
Council Committee for a presentation by students of the International Christian School at the
February 18, 2009 Council Committee meeting scheduled to be held in West Hawaii. Thank
you.
