RESOLUTION NO. 208__ 98
A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING AN AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE DEPARTMENT OF
EDUCATION AND THE COUNTY OF HAWAII TO DEVELOP A PLAYGROUND
FACILITY AT HONAUNAU SCHOOL.
WHEREAS, the County recognizes the need to develop a playground facility in the
Honaunau area of Kona; and
WHEREAS, the County has received the approval from the State of Hawaii, Department
of Education (DOE), to develop such a playground facility at Honaunau School, North Kona; and
WHEREAS, Kona architect, Jack Parazette is donating his services in designing and
drafting the structure; and
WHEREAS, the playground facility will be built to comply with the public playground
guidelines; and
WHEREAS, upon its completion, the playground facility shall be maintained by the
DOE, and the County will assume no responsibility in operating or maintaining the facility after
its completion; and
WHEREAS, the playground facility will be available to the public during non-school
hours; and
WHEREAS, Section 2-53, Hawaii County Code, provides that the County may use
public school property by agreement with the DOE to the extent that such property may be
adaptable and available for County recreational use.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF
HA WAIl that it authorizes the County Parks and Recreation Department to execute an agreement
with the Department of Education to develop a playground facility at Honaunau School.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that upon its completion, the playground facility shall be
solely operated and maintained by the Department of Education, Honaunau School.

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the Clerk of the County of Hawaii forward a copy of
this resolution to Clarence Mills, West Hawaii District Superintendent for the Department of
Education; Joyce Iwashita, Principal ofHonaunau School; Mayor Stephen K. Yamashiro; and
George Yoshida, Director of the Department of Parks and Recreation.
