<br />----------------_.------~------- --~- - - ---_.--~------ ----""--- <br /> <br />,,--.. ~ ... <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />COUNTY OF HAWAII <br /> <br />STATE OF HAWAII <br /> <br />RESOLUTION NO. <br /> <br />229 98 <br /> <br />A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING FEBRUARY 1998 AS "RECYCLE AWARENESS MONTH' <br />IN THE COUNTY OF HAWAII. <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the President of the United States' Climate Change Action Plan, Action #16, <br /> <br />calls for increased waste reduction and recycling as a means of helping to reduce greenhouse gas <br /> <br />emissions and to mitigate climate change; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii has a goal of diverting 50% of the waste stream by the <br /> <br />year 2000; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, over 60% of the 1997 Hilo waste stream has been identified as materials that <br /> <br />are recoverable and could be reused or recycled; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, waste reduction, recycling, reusing and compo sting are viable means of <br /> <br />recovering materials instead of landfilling; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, metals, tin cans, aluminum cans, paper, cardboard, and number one and <br /> <br />number two plastics are recyclable in Hawaii County for local or other markets; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, February is "National Recycle Month"; and <br /> <br />. WHEREAS, February recycling projects for Hawaii County include metals recycling, <br /> <br />greenwaste recovery program, glass diversion grants, general diversion grants, School Recycling <br /> <br />Challenge for all Big Island schools, backyard compost workshops, and "Recycle Day-Residential <br /> <br />Used Motor Oil Collection" in Hilo, Waimea, Kailua-Kona and Ocean View. <br />
