RESOLUTION NO. 67 ~9
A RESOLUTION REQUESTING THAT THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF LAND ANll
NATURAL RESOURCES ABANDON ANY EFFORT AND/OR PLAN TO ERADICATE
FERAL CATTLE WITHIN THE HONUAULA FOREST RESERVE LOCATED ON THE
SLOPES OF HUALALAI BY HELICOPTER HUNT.
WHEREAS, the cattle industry is an important part of the agricultural foundation of the
Hawaii Island and the industry is economically threatened; and
WHEREAS, portrayal of the cattle industry as damaging to our ecosystem further
diminishing its chance for survival; and
WHEREAS, the proposed shooting of cattle in recovered pasture land is unacceptably
dangerous to hikers and adjoining property owners; and
WHEREAS, the effectiveness of the mission of this program has not been demonstrated
as valid and this procedure is questionable at best; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that the
State of Hawaii, Department of Land and Natural Resources abandon any effort and/or plan to
shoot feral cattle within the Honuaula Forest Reserve located on the slopes of Hualalai from
helicopters as proposed; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Land and Natural Resources
work with the Cattlemen's Association and various conservation groups to establish a safer,
humane, and effective process for achieving success in their mission; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the County Clerk shall forward certified copies of
this resolution to the Honorable Governor Linda Lingle, the Chair of the Board of Land and
Natural Resources, the Director of the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of
Forestry and Wildlife, and Mayor William Kenoi.
