Subject: 2% Fund & the Budegt Shortfall
Dear County Council members:
I'm writing you this to ask you not to use the 2% of our taxes we voted to use to purchase and
preserve Big Island lands as the mayor has proposed.
I was disappointed to read in the West Hawaii Today newspaper headline story that the mayor
plans to 'dip into the voter-approved land use fund' to help balance our county budget. I realize
that there are many critical services the county needs to provide such as police and fireman.
But, let me remind you that the citizens of Hawaii considered the preservation of our special
places to be so important that we voted to use 2% of our taxes to pay for the purchase of these
lands to preserve them forever. This is a voter approved fund, not something decided by
elected officials. Its not often that citizens find issues that are so important to them that they
are willing actually vote to pay for them. Please carefully consider your position on this issue. I
for one would be willing to pay higher taxes to keep this fund intact.
