I am a member of the committee that spearheaded the 2% initiative that was passed into law by 57% of the voters in November of 2006. It represents hundreds of hours work of hundreds of volunteers who collected 9,782 signatures on the Initiative petitions to get the question on the 2006 ballot. The Open Space commissioners have volunteered thousands of hours of work to review submissions from the public and make recommendations to the mayor for lands to be acquired.. You would be dishonoring their dedication and service to the public if you use the money for some other purpose. You will be missing the opportunity to acquire land at rock bottom prices that may never be available again. You have been given the duty to secure lands for future generations and preserve the open spaces that make this island something special. Recently there were visiting musicians from a remote provice in Siberia who felt that our land is loved here as it is in their small part of Siberia. Please honor the our love for the 'aina and respect the people's clear wishes to have these moneys set aside every year for the preservation of important lands. Mahalo, Karen Clarkson P.O.
