Dear Kelly,
As a business owner, in an innovative start-up here in Kona, I know how hard this recession has been.
We at Kona Blue have had to lay off a significant portion of our staff. All of our management have
taken across-the-board pay cuts. And still, these are very difficult times.
But one thing should be sacred: the will of the people. The 2% Land Fund has been established as a
direct democratic vote. It is something that we, the people, recognize as invaluable. It is deeply
disturbing to me to see the County now targeting this fund as an additional source of revenue.
Hard choices must be made. We have made them here at Kona Blue. We expect that the County will
also have to make similar tough choices. Lay off some less essential staff. Mandate some pay cuts, at
least till we are back in the black.
But make these tough choices like grown-ups. This is what we expect of you. Don't take the easy,
cheap shot, by raiding that which we have asked to be set aside.
Please, please spare the 2% Fund. This is for our future.
Mahalo, and aloha,
Neil
