Mahalo to Council person Pete Hoffmann for introducing Council Resolution 81-09
to oppose House Bill 1266. I urge the entire Council to please vote to pass resolution
81-09.
I'm a Kurtistown farmer of nearly 30 years. Without the Council's support Hawaii
County's agricultural lands may soon become experimental fields for GE crops.
Once GMOs are released, there can be no recall. It is imperative that we act on
the precautionary principle.
At stake is our organic food system and very basic democratic concepts the right
of local self governance and the right of home rule. It's clear that big corporate
GMO interests are behind BB 1266. Who else would want to legislate that NO
County or State Agency has the right to regulate Genetically Engineered (GE)
agricultural crops by passing Ordinances that would protect farmers, crops
and citizens, including future labeling of GE products?
