Please oppose HB1226 and any other law that prohibits or prevents the state or couri'l])from
performing its duties. In this case those duties are to protect our islands from
irreversible contaminations.
The environmental threat from GMOs is very real indeed, and you are not elected to
consider how best to make money for biotech corporations by abrogating your own--that is,
OUR-- authority, you are elected to protect your constituents by opposing such abrogations
of power by commercial interests.
Time and again, and particularly recently, corporations have demonstrated that their
primary and sometimes sole purpose is to make profits AT WHATEVER COST to the environment,
to the community and even to democracy itself.
Hawaii needs local community oversight of GMOs; community and consumer safety is
endangered when local governments are prohibited from taking every step to ensure public
safety.
I urge you to oppose attempts to weaken or limit State or County authority to regulate
genetically modified food in Hawaii.
