Subject: FW: OPPOSE Resolution 81-09, Molokai Farm Bureau _ U1
Honorable Council Members,
I am a Hawaii resident employed in agriculture and writing as representative of the Molokai Farm
Bureau (MFB). The MFB supports House Bill 1226 and asks that you not oppose it. I understand the
issue of "home rule," but there are very good reasons for supporting HB1226.
GM foods have been consumed by the general public since the mid 1990s, and unlike other types of
foods, have never been associated with a single health problem. One reason for this stellar safety
record is the extremely rigorous government oversight of GM crops, which undergo years of testing
and are regulated by such agencies as the Food & Drug Administration, Department of Agriculture and
Environmental Protection Agency.
Despite this terrific accomplishment, Hawaii's seed industry is constantly hammered by those who
oppose the technology, and by factually wrong information that continues to be circulated despite
efforts to correct them.
HB1226 recognizes the value of this science-based agricultural industry to Hawaii, and seeks to support
an industry that provides well paying jobs in Maui County, keeps agricultural lands in productive
agricultural use, is providing huge benefits to the environment, and is governed by a rigorous
regulatory system that is obviously working well, given GM crops' excellent safety record.
Please support HB1226.
Respectfully submitted,
Raymond J. Foster, Molokai Farm Bureau Legislative Affairs
