My daughter at the age of 6 years was diagnosed with Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia in 1985, 10 months after my neighbors son was diagnosed with the same disease. While my daughter was in the hospital I read there were high levels of DBCP in the well water at Pauwela, Maui. I remembered the EPA banned DBCP because it caused cancer, but Governor Ariyoshi was able to extend the use of DBCP another 10 years in Hawaii for the Pineapple industry. In the early 80s there was much write up in the news about DBCP in the well water in Kunia, Wahiawa, and Pauwela. And then the issue of DBCP in the well water disappeared from the news. Today at the Catholic church in Pepeekeo, I meet so many people with liver disease and kidnesy disease. Please visit the Kapiolani Womens & Childrens Oncology ward in Honolulu to see the devastating effects on children from reckless environmental policies. My daughter died in 1989. My brother currently lives on Maui across Genetically Enginered fields in Kihei. More and more fields are being developed. Each day my brother and his family wake up to allergies and throat tightening. Please don't expose the people of Hawaii to more toxic land and toxic water. We have no where to go as refugees of devastating environmental policies. Look at our people migrating from Micronesia. Please protect the people of Hawaii county as you have been placed in office to do.
