Subject: PC-13 (Comm. 162): Forwards a negative recommendation of the nomination of Mr. Richa(SL cA
Creagan to the Ka'u Community Development Plan Steering Committee.
To whom it may concern,
I was fortunate enough to grow up in Ka'u and am a proud graduate of Ka'u High School. Go Trojans. I am from
Wood Valley and Pahala and my great-grandparents are buried in Naalehu. After many years on the mainland, I
was happy in 1993 to secure a job back on the Big Island, at the University of Hawaii-Hilo. Richard Creagan was
a student in courses I teach in the UHH College of Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Management. I
can say he was one of the best students I have ever had, and I support his appointment to the CDP steering
committee. I believe he will be an excellent committee member-- he will provide a rational, intelligent and
measured voice to the committee's proceedings.
I am unfamiliar with the CDP issues under consideration, but I am familiar with the personalities. I am informed
that Guy Enriques may be involved in committee member selection. I know Guy because he is one year older
than me and we went to school together. I always admired Guy back in school and I still do. He was an
outstanding athlete and student, he's an overall good guy, and I'm sure all of us of a certain age shared a sense
of Ka'u pride when Guy ran for office. We were proud of him in high school and we're proud of him now. I
know that Guy also provides a rational, intelligent and measured voice.
I now live in Hilo, but I am concerned about Ka'u. It's best if all voices are heard when considering decisions
affecting the community. I believe the best decisions for Ka'u will be facilitated if both Guy and Richard can
contribute to the conversation.
In summary, I strongly support the appointment of Richard Creagan to the CDP steering committee.
