RE: Resolution 88 09
Ladies & Gentlemen;
Thank you, Mr. Greenwell, for bringing Resolution 88 09 to the Council to have the
Western portion of Saddle Road repaved. Thank you, Ms. Naeole, for your support.
I have been writing various government authorities on the dangers of this road for
years. As will happen with roads of this age, it has deteriorated exponentially faster
recently due to the numerous large trucks traveling the road on a daily basis and the
increased employment on the Kohala side of the island.
I understand budgets are tight right now, but this section of the Saddle Road is
extremely dangerous.
The attached photo is of one of the more frightening spots. The County has been
working on the culvert since January, I believe. The spot is on a hill, coming out of a
dark area and is on a slight curve. The County work makes this really a one lane
road. The visibility from either direction is very poor. It is another example of a very
dangerous section of Saddle Road. Now the County workers have moved on to fix
another culvert without finishing this one for whatever reason, leaving this area
extremely treacherous.
A few months ago, when we were having all those storms, there were about 4 days of
constant fog with visibility often at about 30-40 feet. Driving at that time meant you
absolutely had to stay on your side of the road, drive through all the holes and pray
no one was coming in the opposite direction straddling the line. It is about as scary
as I have ever seen driving Saddle Road.,
Please, I urge you to pass Resolution 88 09 and repave the rest of the Western portion
of the Saddle Road.
