In reading this resolution, it seems to have focused.on any negative that could possibly be found. As with the
2% Land Fund, I'm not looking for Council members who are unwilling to work towards the will of the people.
I want leaders, people who are capable of forward thinking and, rather than running around crying gloom and
doom, have the wherewithal to address an issue and come up with solutions. Trust me, the people want fair and
open elections. We are tired of big business and big money having undue influence on our elections. It's
beneficial to look at all sides of an issue, but I find it hard to see where this resolution has done that. This is a
veiled attempt to obstruct the wishes of the people.
This resolution sites a U.S. Supreme Court decision, which sounds quite impressive, but our Fair Elections
Program already withstood legal review by the Governor's office. It's counterproductive to go looking for
ways out of this.
This resolution sites several instances of "fraud and abuse". Spare me the righteousness! Citizens of Big Island
want this Fair Elections program to prevent fraud and abuse. Any day and everyday, fraud and abuse can be
found somewhere. This program will help to limit those problems.
A pilot program is a tentative model for future development. This resolution states in part that "...a true pilot
program will encompass all counties, not just Flawai'i County, to determine if such a program could be feasible
on a statewide basis..." This is backward thinking. Why would one want to try a pilot program such as this on
such a large scale as our entire state? This thinking is mind boggling, and quite honestly, frightening. It shows
me that there are Council members who can't think outside the box and/or are afraid to let others be involved in
the elections process, neither of which is beneficial to the citizens of this island.
Hawai'i County has the opportunity to show the state how elections can be fair and open to all. Please stand
together as a Council and as one voice for those you represent, and fight to lead the way for fair elections.
