Re: HB 345 and County Council Resolution
As are my fellow LWV members and other concerned groups, I am very surprised that council members
are considering RES 098, opting out of the voter funded election pilot program for Hawaii County.
I fail to see what anyone has to lose by this program. The money is there for it. No one has to use these
funds if they do not want to. Candidates are perfectly free to continue fund raising as they always have.
But a larger and more diverse cross-section of the public would be able to afford to run for office, and
isn't diversity a good thing?
If this should turn out to be a very successful endeavor,and why shouldn't it, Hawaii County
Government would be on the map as one of the most forward looking in the nation. That would be
something to very proud of.
