RE: Resolution 08-09 banning release of insects that target species related to ohi'a.
Dear Council Member;,
Please support Resolution 08-09 to ban biological control agents that target species
related to Ohi'a trees. These tree species are an important part of our landscape and
add beauty and value to our properties. If they are disfigured or killed by the scale
insects that may be released by the federal government our property values will be
reduced and therefore, our tax revenues as well. Disfigurement, defoliation, and
possible death of thousands of trees will also make our island less attractive to tourists,
further hurting our economy. It is risky business to release invasive insects into our
environment, particularly when the research for this insect was not conducted over a
long enough period to determine the long-term consequences to our precious island
environment. Let us instead malama 'aina for our children and grandchildren and all
the generations to come.
