Dear County Council:
My name is Elizabeth Pickett. Except for my time at Yale for graduate school, I've been
working on-island for ten years as a consultant for various businesses and organizations. I
have a background in geo-chemistry and environmental management and have worked
extensively on user issues regarding coastal lands. My graduate and professional research
and experience show that, for the most part, our coastal lands are being well taken care of
by our residents. Extensive data and research demonstrates that the greatest majority of
public users pick up after themselves and care for the land on which they camp and care for
the water where they fish. Specifically in Kohala, there is on-the-ground management
occurring informally all along the coastline by the users themselves. There is little need to
intensively manage most of the publicly used coastal lands. But, there is a need to preserve
them NOW, so our residents continue to have places to camp, fish, and engage in other
positive family- and community-building activities. Please support Resolution 106. Please
preserve Pao'o and Kaiholena.
I also volunteer my time with students from Kohala and am significantly involved in a
coastal stewardship program with Kohala residents and youth. This effort is directed to
further enhance and increase ongoing caretaking and regular user-based management of
coastal lands and waters. Many of these Kohala families have accessed the coastal lands
for generations. It is imperative that Pao'o and Kaiholena are preserved so these children
have a chance to experience what makes Kohala so special. Please vote for Resolution
106.
