Subject: 2% for open space
Preserve the 2% for Open Space Fund!
I know it is tempting to look at this Fund as a source of money for use in this time of budget
tightening. But, don't touch it! You will betray the trust of the people who voted for the
preservation of open space and cultural sites.
Look to other ways to find the money for the operating budget and look to ways to reduce the
operating costs of the county. There is plenty of wasteful spending--just look at at the
bulldozer rental fiasco that should be seen as an ongoing embarassment and a most obvious
example of poor oversight of spending. I'm sure if you look, you'll find plenty of places to stop
the hemorrhage of county money into mistaken and stupid expenditures.
Scrutiny of government is often difficult for the average citizen. Wise government is a force for
good. Unfortunately, when government is unwise, it tends not to correct itself. The citizenry
often needs to go to the courts to put government back on the proper path. Suspending the
2% for Open Space Fund will likely result in a lawsuit against the county. I really think so. In
our times, it has been lawsuits that have corrected governmental errors.
Do the right thing and preserver the 2% for Open Space Fund.
