Subject: VOTE NO on using 2% Land Fund 77% say "bold defiance"
Aloha, Honorable Council Members and Mayor Kenoi!
As of today, 77% of Hawaii County residents who voted in a West Hawaii Today
poll believe your raiding or ending of the 2% Land Fund is: "Bold defiance of the
public trust and a move worthy of recall initiatives."
A few brave council members have been steadfast in responding to the will of the
people Mr. Yagong, Ms. Ford, and Ms. Naeole, Mahalo nui loa! You seem to realize
that besides the issue of preservation of open space, which is important enough, this
is an issue of trust: trust in the people, trust in democracy, and trust in the resources
that have given us life, food, shelter, and beauty.
NOW is the time to save land from development before it is gone forever. You can
balance the budget using a different strategy, according to Debbie Hecht, and here's
how: The budget deficit is projected at $31.5 million. There are 439 funded but not
filled jobs padding the budget, if these jobs are cut from the budget the county could
cut the deficit by $9 to $14 million. The county can sell tax liens on properties that
have delinquent taxes. Stop taking home county cars. Each county worker could take
one day off per month- saving the county approximately $4 to $6 million.
NOW is the time to follow through with what 57% of voters asked you to do in 2006
preserve vital resources.
NOW is the time to purchase two of the properties which the Council has directed its
Finance Director to acquire, which are now for sale: Kiholena in Kohala and the
Puapua'a property in Kona.
Please protect Hawaii's significant resources by following through with the purchase
of Open Space for all our children, grandchildren, and future generations. Please say
NO to using 2% Land Fund money to meet budget shortfalls.

Aloha, Honorable Council Members!
What makes the island of Hawaii so extraordinary is our spectacular scenery, the
stunning seaside, and the magnificent mountains, valleys, and views which have
instilled a sense of the sublime in our citizens and visitors.The 2% Land Fund for
purchase of Open Space in Hawaii was passed by 57% of voters in 2006 to
preserve these vital resources.
I understand there has been discussion within the County Council to raid the
2% Land Fund to meet current or future budget shortfalls.This would be a betrayal of
voters' trust! In fact, with land prices deflated, this is a great time to purchase two of
the properties which the Council has directed its Finance Director to acquire, which
are now for sale: Kiholena in Kohala and the Puapua'a property in Kona.
How much has been deposited in the Land Fund account since December 2006?
When was it deposited? How much interest has been earned? How much has been
spent and on what properties? Could this information be made available to the public
in bi-annual accounting?
Please protect Hawaii's significant resources by following through with the purchase
of Open Space for all our children, grandchildren, and future generations. Please say
NO to using 2% Land Fund money to meet budget shortfalls.
