My name is Michelle Mitchell and my husband Tom and two daughters Malia and Kiana love
the coastal lands of Pao'o (Secrets) and Kaiholena and we want our voices to be heard. Tuesday the
County Council will be deciding how to rank properties for purchase with the existing 2% Open Space
Fund. We want Pao'o and Kaiholena to be high on the priority list for purchase with the $8.8 million
funds. We live in Hawi and want to see our open coastline and cultural heritage sites preserved for
future generations.
We wish to tell the Council how we feel
about protecting the lands of these
critical, side-by-side parcels of land,
t' which will be developed into a string of
oceanfront mansions. The owners have
said they will sell to the County. Please
purchase these parcels!
I have a PhD in Cultural Anthropology
and I am in strong support of purchasing
r ,r
_ Kaiholena because it has the MOST
NUMEROUS INTACT, PRE-
t, CONTACT ARCHEOLOGICAL AND
CULTURAL SITES IN THE STATE.
We have two small children 20 months
V :1
and 4 years old that we hope to teach
about the many sacred archeological
sites along our coastline. We also wish
to nurture their own growth in appreciation and knowledge of Hawaiian culture and the seashore.
For 9 years Kohala groups have successfully kept development at bay while shepherding the lands
to the top of the County priority purchase list a big, hard, uphill battle. The 10.7 acres at Pao'o has the
highest score of any property ever ranked by the Open Space Commission, 91 Kaiholena, 263 acres,
has a score of 84%, close behind. Both properties have Council resolutions calling for the County to
negotiate purchase with the willing sellers. Together they would protect and keep open a wide stretch of
the coast between the highway and the shore surrounded by government owned land.
Please County Council Make Pao and Kaiholena one and two purchases on the priority list!
Thanks for listening!
