I support Resolution 81-09 and I oppose MB 1226.

Let us not give away our power of self-determination to the Federal government. We are
intelligent enough to decide things for ourselves and we have our own best interests at heart.
Genetic engineering is not a practice that-at this early stage-can be condoned since it possibly
puts our health and our farmlands, and therefore our economy which ultimately depends on both,
in grave danger. NO genetically engineered crop has been determined to be absolutely safe for our
consumption. Our islands have a delicate ecosystem and so do we humans-our mutual health is
intertwined.

WE MUST RETAIN OUR RIGHTS TO OVERSEE ALL SUCH EXPERIMENTS: THEY MUST NOT BE
ALLOWED WITHOUT OUR EXPRESS APPROVAL FOR EACH SUCH EXPERIMENT WITH A CASE BY
CASE STUDY.

In essence HB1226 will eliminate our State government's ability to take any regulatory actions in
our own behalf. Instead of supporting that abrogation of our rights let us be proactive and let us
take charge of regulating our crops, of testing, labelling and banning if we deem it appropriate. Let
us enact significant financial penalties for abuse by biotech corporations and shift the burden of
proof to them.
