Ordinance No. 37
REGULATING THE RATES OF
HACK FARES FOR THE CITY OF
HI ~O.
Be it ordained by the Board of Sup-
ervis ors of the County of Hawaii:
Se;;tion 1. The city limits of Hilo
shall be defined as follows:
Mahiulu bridge on the north; Hilo
Sugar Company's flume crossing Kau-
ma.ua road, ~ mile from the Couct-
l:ovse. upper end of the cemetery on
Yonahawai street on the west; Waia-
kea mill on Volcano road on the
south; Waiakea schoolhouse and
Reed's bay on the east.
A. From any Point to any other
point within the city limits, when not
exceeding half mile, Por one or two
passengers ...........__ __ .............____ $.25
B. When exceeding half mile, and
not erceedIIxg one mile, each passen-

C. When exceedin^ one mile and
not over two miles, and inside of the
city limits, for one or Cwo passen-

For each additional passanger ._. $.25
D. If exceeding two miles and with-
in the city limits, each passanger__. $.50
E. When answering calls within
the city limits, distance may be count-
ed from the hack stand to the place of
c!estinaticn.
F. When Hilo town hacks (or sur-
reys) are ordered by telephone from
any Point outside of the city limits, or
ordered to return for passengers left
at any given point outside of the city
limit;, half fare may be charged for
gC.ng to answer call or order.
C. If within the city, ten minutes'
thus in waiting shall be allowed to all
return passengers without extra
charge. Waiting for a longer time may
be charged at the rate of 25 cents for
each quarter hour, or fraction thereof.
H. For each vehicle attending a
funeral in Hilo town ._........_.___... $2.00
I. Shopping or making calls, when
a.t least half oP the time is taken up in

For each additional hour, 50 cents

J. Continuous driving by the hour:

K. When required to go beyond
two miles on any government road
half fare may be coilected for return-
ing with empty vehicle.
L. A child under three years old,
when with a grown person, no charge;
over three years and not more than
ten years old, half price.
M. No extra charge shall be made
for a single hand grip or package.
N. On each small box, grip or pac-
kage, more than one carried with pas-
sengers, 25 cents each for Query two
miles travelled on Government roads.
O. Between the hours of 9 p. m.
and 5 a. m., if outside of Honolii on
the Hilo-Hamakua road, or five miles
on the other roads, the above Pare
may be doubled; within the said lim-
its the rates may be doubled only be-
tween the h curs of 11 p, m. and 5,
a. m.
Section 11. AC steamer landings
s.nd rzllrcad depots there shall be a
lane or location designated by the
Sheriff of the County and all hacks
and carriages shall line up in the or-
dsr in which they arrive, and each
hack or carriage shall remain in its
position until engaged, or it becomes
its turn to move up to the front. No
agent or runner of any hack, hack
stand or stables, shall be allowed to
soNcit trade in or upon any wharf or
railroad depot, or in any way to in-
terfere with passengers taking any
hack or carriage they choose. Run-
ners Yor hacks, hack stands or stables,
may solicit for trade outside of said
l.ne for the carriages to line up to.
2. No licensed hack or other li-
censed vehicles ,hall remain on any
wharf longer than is necessary to
p!ck up or discharge its load of Pas-
:engers.
3. Hacks (and surreys) having an
appointed stand in the town of Hilo
sh.ali not b= compelled to go beyond
the Honolii bridge on the north, five
miles on the "Volcano", "Kaumana"
and "Piihonua" roads, or the first
plantation camp on the "Amaulu"
road.
4. There shall be at all times a
card of rates placed in a leather poc-
ket firmly attached to the center of
the back of the front seat of every ve-
hicle licensed to carry passengers and
the words "Rates of Fares" impress-
ed on the front of said leather pocket
in letters not less than one-half inch
is size.
Section 3. Any person who shall
violate or fail to observe any of the
requirements of this ordinance shall
be fined noC more than twenty-five
dollars, for each such violation and
Che license of any such licensed
vehicle or driver may, in the discre-
tion oP the court, be canoelled.
Section 4. This ordinance shall
take effect from and after the first day
of July, A. D. 1909.

ervisors of the County of Hawaii,
held at the County Seat upon the
4th day of June, A. D. 1909, and
upon being put to vote said Ordinance
wa^, adopted by a majority of the Sup-
ervisors at said meeting.
