Ordinance No. 59
AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND ORDI-
NANCE NUMBER 51 OF THE
COUNTY OF HAWAII, AS AMEND-
ED BY ORDINANCE NUMBER 55
OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII, RE-
LATING TO THF, ERECTION,
CONSTRUCTION, ALTERATION,
REPAIR AND REMOVAL OF
BUILDINGS AND OTHER STRUC-
TURES IN THE CITY OF HILO
COUNTY OF HAWAII.
Be it ordained by the Board of Sup-
ervisors of the County of Hawaii.
Section 1. Section 14 of Ordinance
Number 51 of the County of Hawaii,
as amended by Ordinance Number 55
of the County of Hawaii, is hereby
amended so as to read as follows:
Alteration of Existing Buildings.
"Section 14. It shall be unlawful
to enlarge, build upon, or add to any
bolding unless such work shall con-
form to the provisions of this Ordi-
nance; Provided, however, that when
any part of an existing building with-
in the fire limits is taken for public
use by condemnation or otherwise, it
shall be lawful to repair the remain-
ing portion of such building with ma-
terials similar to those of which the
building was originally constructed.
It shall be unlawful to make repairs or
alterations, excepting painting, paper-
ing or replasteri:,? upon any frame
building within the fire limits to an
extent in all, including repair thereto-
fore made, greater than forty per
cent of its assessed value."
Section 2. Paragraphs 3 and 4 of
Section 8 of Ordinance Number 55 of
the County of Hawaii are hereby
amended so as to read as follows:
"Studding on the exterior and in-
terior walls of the buildings shall not
be placed more than 24 inches from
centers.
"The underpinning of buildings shall
be at ]east 1 inch thicker than the
studding of the story immediately
above and shall be placed not more
than 32 inches from centers from sills
of 3x4 inches are used and not more
than 36 inches from centers when
sills of 4x4 inches are used and not
more than 60 inches from centers
when sills of 4x6 inches are used and
not more than 84 inches from centers
when sills of 6x6 inches are used."
