ORDINANCE IQO. 56
AN ORDINANCE TO PRO~IIDE FOR THE NUMBERING OF HOUSES AND BUILDINGS
WITHIN THE DIS'TRICT' OF' SOUTH HILO, COUNTY OF HAWAII.
BE IT ORDAINED BY THE BOAi~D OP SUPBRVISCRS OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII:
SECTION 1. The County Engineer of the County of Hawaii or his
assistant shall have power and it shall be his duty to procure a
map or series of maps showing the streets, roads, and lanes within
the following boundaries of the District of South Hilo, County of
Hawaii, to wit:
Beginning at a point near Leleiwi Point whose coordinates
referred to Government Triangulation Station "Halai" being
North 5887.84 feet and East 33121.25 feet, thence running by
true azimuths and distances as follows:
1. 34~ 59' 31,600 feet to near 4-Mile Bridge,
Volcano Road, thence;
2. 90~ 00' 35,000 feet, thence;
3. 180 00' 20,000 feet, thence;
4. 234 00' 25,040 feet, to Honolii Arch Bridge,
thence;
S. Along the South side of Honolii River to the seashore
and along the meandering seashore to the point of
beginning, and containing approximately 27,085 acres
or 42.3 sq. miles.
SECTION 2. Said County Engineer or his assistant shall have
the power and it shall be his duty to regulate the numbering of all
houses and buildings in and within the boundaries of the District
of South Hilo described in Section 1 of this Ordinance.
SECTION 3. All main entrance to buildings from streets, roads
or lanes shall be numbered, and the County Engineer or his assistant
shall assign to each house or building now or hereafter erected its
proper number or numbers, and deliver free of charge to the owner
or occupant a certificate designating each number and location.
SECTION 4. It shall be the duty of every person or persons
owning any house or building fronting on ar,y street, road or lane
within the boundaries of the District of South Hilo, described in
Section 1 of this Ordinance, to number the same or cause the same to
be numbered in accordance with the provisions of this Ordinance
within thirty (30) days aFter receipt of a designated number or
numbers from the County Engineer or his assistant and to remove or
efface any wrong number or numbers upon such house or building, and
it shall be the duty of every person or persons owning any house or

SECTION 5. All numbers shall be placed in such a manner as
to be readily seen from the street, road or lane; shall be of a
different color from the background on which they are placed, and
shall be at least two and one-half inches in height. The numbers
shall be placed in a substantial and permanent manner, chalk or
other easily effaceable material shall not be permitted,
SECTION 6. All houses and buildings shall be numbered at
the expense of the owner of such house or building.
SECTION 7. Any person tearing down, defacing or changing
any number affixed to any house or building in accordance with the
provisions of this Ordinance shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor
and upon conviction thereof be fined not less than Two Dollars ($2.00)
and not more than Ten Dollars ($10.00).
SECTION 8. Any owner of a house or building in and within the
boundaries of the District of South Hilo described in Section 1 of
this Ordinance, who shall neglect or refuse to number such house
or building as herein provided or who shall place, maintain, or
allow to remain thereon any number other than that designated and
directed by the County Engineer ox' his assistant, or who shall
number such house or building without first obtaining a proper
number from said County Engineer or his assistant, shall be deemed
guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction thereof shall be fined
not less than Five Dollars ($5.00) and not more than Twenty-five
Dollars ($25.00), and a further penalty of alike sum for every
thirty (30) days thereafter that he shall neglect or refuse to
properly number such house or building or to efface an improper
number.
