RESOLUTION NO. 344 00
RESOLUTION DESIGNATING NOVEMBER AS "KONA COFFEE MONTH"
WHEREAS, Kona Coffee has been in continuous production on Hawai'i Island's West Side for over 170 years and continues to be
a large contributor to the local economy;
WHEREAS, Kona Coffee has become an economic mainstay and cultural taproot of the multi- ethnic community of Kona;
WHEREAS, ideal growing conditions along Kona's upland slopes, fertile volcanic soil and handpicked crops combine to produce
the richly flavored Kona Coffee;
WHEREAS, novice farmers, together with second, third, fourth, and fifth generation coffee farmers have created a renaissance for
Kona Coffee production and its marketability;
WHEREAS, the month of November captures a diversity of activity marked by the harvesting of red coffee cherry to the aroma of
fresh roasted beans;
WHEREAS, Kona Coffee, highly valued the world over, produces grounds for celebration every harvest season; and
WHEREAS, during the month of November, the Kona Coffee Cultural Festival has served as a tribute to Kona Coffee's cultural
heritage for the past thirty years;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAI'I that it hereby designates the
month of November as "KONA COFFEE MONTH".
