BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNfY OF HAWAII: SECTION 1. Chapter 15 of the Hawaii County Code (Ordinance No. 93), as amended, adopting and amending the Uniform Building Code, 1973 Edition, is hereby further amended as follows: A. Paragraph (bj of Section 67, amendin~~ Section 1714 of the Uniform Building Code, 1973 Edition, as amended, is amended as follows: "Section 1714(b) :;hall be deleted and superseded by the following: (b) Minimum Horizontal Clearance. The minimum horizontal clearance from the burner hf:ad(s) of a too (or surface) cooking unit to combustible walls extending above the cooki;zg surface shaL1 be not less than 12 inches. EXCEFiION: Walls of combustible materials to be installed within 12 inches of a cooking wait shall be provided with protection equivalent to 1~2--inch Type "X" gypsiun wallboard covered with approved laminated plastic.." B. Section 82, addi.nf; Section 2520 to the Uniform Building Code, 19`r'3 Edition, as amended, is amended as follows: '"fhe third paragraph of exception 3, under "EXCEPTIONS" of Secticn 2520 shall be deleted and superseded. by i;he following: 'rJhen wood freune dwellings are supported by posts, bracing oi' sufficient strength to stabilize the struci;ure against movement from wind pressure or earthquake shall be provided. (a) Board.^, i'or Single Wall. Construction. (1) One and One-Eight;h Inch Boards. Single wall construction with boards of 1.-1~8-inch net t}~ickness are not required to have girt s. (2) One Inch Boards. Where single wall construction is with boards of one inch net thickness, no girt is required provided approved stiffeners for any section of such wall is spaced not more than 10 feet along the wall. (3) Three-Fourths Inch Boards. Single wall construction with boards of 3/4-inch net thickness shall have gins and cross partitions at least every 30 feet. (4) Eleven-Sixteenths Inch Boards. Single wall construction with boards of 11/16-inch net thickness shall be limited to the following conditions: (A) where the span between load bearing single wails shall not exceed 24 £eet; (B) the dead load on such walls shall not exceed 150 pounds per lineal foot; (C) gists shall be provided; (D) there shall be approved stiffeners at least every 10 feet along such wall; and (E) arty openings in such walls for windows and doors shall have full height jambs or studs where the girt is not continuous. (b) Approved Stiffeners. Approved stiffeners shall be studs at least 2 inches by 4 inches, full height window or door jambs, posts, walls or partitions at right angle to the section of wall under consideration. (c) Gists. Gists for single wall construction shall be not less than 2 inch by 6 inch belt course or other approved strengthening about midheight between the floor and the ceiling on all exterior walls." C. SECTION 2. This ordinance shall take effect upon its approval.
