Re: Shipman "Gateway Center", Kea'au
Honorable Chair and Members of the Committee:
We appreciated the opportunity to comment at the public hearing on the
referenced issue, and offer the following written comments in support of the
project.
7. For six years, HIEDB has been a tenant in the former Ola'a Sugar
Field Manager's Office off Milo Camp Road. We have seen extraordinary
progress in agricultural development in the area, and are pleased to note that
new processing/consolidation and distribution facilities are unden~ay
Kea'au, in the tradition of Ola'a Sugar, is once again becoming the hub oY
agricultural development and an important farming center-
2. For several years, we have noted the advent of educational facilities,
now almost completed as Kea'au High School and Kea'au Intermediate
School. 4Ve are also pleased thai Kamehameha Schools will continence
construction of a 2000-student facility very shortly, encouraging support fer
Kea'au as an important learning center.
3. While still maintaining its rural character, the advent of infrastructure
and "near" initiatives does present challenges for Kea'au. As much as we
appreciate the new bypass road, we are extremely concerned with speeding, in
both directions. Individuals appear to mistake the Bypass ROAl7 for a major
highway. Speed limits of 35mph should be standard before each
intersection, just as in every other rural/urban approach- A four-way
intersection/stoplight will also calm this speeding tendency.
We ok forward to being good neighbors with Shipman Gateway Center.
