SHIPMAN LTD MIXED INDUSTRIAL-COMMERCIAL ZONING RE UEST
Gentlepersons:
After attending yesterday's public hearing, I would like to be on
record in favor of the re-zoning and construction for the new
shopping center.
I am very pleased to see that Keaau is beginning to grow and start
receiving so many of the improvements which are long overdue.
The idea of a four-way intersection does concern me. Not that it
is completely unsafe, but quite frankly, after witnessing the
driving skills of many of the island residents, I am sure there
will be accidents.
Most drivers still do not know how to correctly merge onto Highway
11 from the Kilauea Avenue ramp which leads toward Keaau. Rather
than matching their speed to the highway traffic and merging, they
choose to come to a complete stop and wait for an opening, thereby
promoting an accident, especially to someone behind them who may
know how to merge properly and would be in the process of speeding
up to match the highway traffic.
Therefore, your proposed road design is not necessarily the
problem, the unskilled drivers ARE the problem. Road and
intersection designs are just SYMPTOMS of our automobile accidents.
The unskilled drivers on those roads are the TRUE PROBLEM. Address
the PROBLEM and not the SYMPTOMS and perhaps our road will become
safer.
Keep the progress coming, maybe one day we'll even have cable TV
and county water!
sincerely,n , Comm.
