Honorable Chair and Members of the Commitlee:
In 1994, HIEDB relocated its offices to the former t~la'a Sugar Field Manager's
Office off Milo Camp Road in Kea'au. Our primary reason for selecting this
location was its potential as a center of commerce and agribusiness industry.
During recent years, we have been pleased to observe outstanding progress in
the area, with additions and expansions in the papaya, guava, macadamia nut
and banana industries, floral/foliage shippers, and new businesses up and
dawn the Kea'au-Pahoa Road and Volcano Highway.
We are particularly pleased with the advent of the new Kea'au Intermediate
School, Kea'au High School, and progress on the Kea'au Bypass Road which
will soon connect all these activities while providing safe and efficient
passage to area residents and new businesses along the Bypass access adjacent
to our offices.
We have reviewed the Shipman Gateway Park plans and find them to be
very much to accord with the overall development theme of the area. Witli
the advent of the new and prestigious Kamehameha Schools campus a few
miles further up the Volcano Highway, the Kea'au Junction wilt become an
even more important and effective community and business center.
